SSV Senior Cricket
CCS progressed through to the SSV Gippsland Finals following their Senior Cricket Division Final win against Lavalla at our College ovals on February 25. A great result, with CCS restricting Lavalla to 9/88 from their 20 overs after making 2/182. Tight bowling from Tom Morrison, Jake Pendrick and Lakshay Panwar, was capitalised on by James Moulton (3/7), Seb Pendergast (2/12) and Miller Eastham (2/13).
SSV Senior Boys Cricket – Gippsland Finals
After an impressive showing across the division fixtures, thirteen of the College’s best Year 11 & 12 cricketers ventured to Maffra on March 2nd to compete at the School Sport Victoria Senior Boys Cricket Region Finals.
The team looked to continue its good run of form, facing off against Drouin Secondary College in its first match of the day. Bowling first, CCS gained ascendancy with a steady flow of wickets, as Drouin SC slumped to 9/77. However, an intelligent showing from our opponent’s final two batsmen, pushed the total to 105. Jake Pendrick (3 for 9 off three overs), Mason Annear (2/15) and Seb Pendergast (2/21) were our main wicket-takers.
Our chase got off to a strong start, with Zak Russell and Miller Eastham putting on 30 runs for our opening stand. Drouin’s first bowling change brought about immediate success, with Eastham falling for 21 runs off 16 deliveries. The bowling partnership of Pickering (2/15 off 4 overs) and Davis (1/13 off 4) proved a dire period for CCS, as we edged to 4/59 after 12 overs. Two more wickets would fall before Jake Pendrick (14 off 10) and captain Tom Morrison (45* off 44) steadied the ship with a 32-run 7th wicket partnership to get us home with an over to spare. Morrison’s innings included six boundaries while Pendrick played some beautiful shots through backward point.
Our victory against Drouin propelled us into the Gippsland Final against Nagle Secondary College. After losing the second coin toss for the day, we were sent in to field. Morrison opened with two maiden overs, and our remaining bowlers followed suit with miserly economy rates. Wickets fell at regular intervals as we managed to bowl our opponents out for 65. Seven bowlers made the wicket-takers list, with Jake Pendrick (2/4 off three overs) and Mason Annear (2/6 off two overs) snaring two each.
In response, our run chase began superbly, with Russell and Eastham establishing another strong opening stand of 40, scoring freely at eight runs per over. While Eastham would fall for a well-made 27 off 18, CCS reached its target of 66 two overs later – a victory by nine wickets, with 11 overs to spare.
The side now progresses on to the State Quarter Final on Monday March 22nd.
